Expressions of Interest open for year two Hub partners

Are you passionate about working at the top of the waste hierarchy and tackling the challenge of food waste prevention in Aotearoa?

Every Bite is on a mission to help New Zealanders make small changes at home to waste less food. The project is part of the Ministry for the Environment’s National Food Waste Reduction Programme.

The programme kicked off late last year, bringing together four hubs alongside a core team to design and pilot a food waste prevention programme for households across Aotearoa. The resulting Every Bite programme provides participants with simple, practical tips and tools that help them understand and prevent food waste at home.

Over the past few months we have worked with Sustainable Hawkes Bay, Go Eco, Environment Network Manawatū, and Wastebusters to develop a programme that helps participants learn ways to save money and ‘do their bit’ for the planet. Check out this blog post to find out what we learned from our last wave of pilots.

We are now looking for a number of new Hub partners to work with us in years two and three, to deliver the programme to their communities and continue to improve its impact and participant experience. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the Every Bite programme, and be part of an initiative that is making a real difference when it comes to preventing food waste in Aotearoa.

The second year of the programme starts on October 1st 2024 and will include a national comms campaign supporting hubs to recruit participants and deliver a coordinated programme over the month of May (Food Waste Prevention Month – we will develop a better name with your help!).

New Hubs will be supported to deliver a smaller programme in February 2025 enabling them to get a feel for the content and how they might approach delivery in a way that works for their communities. This will be a warm up ahead of the campaign month in May 2025.

Year two Hub partners will be provided between $25K and $30K to work together and deliver the programme. A local comms pack that includes brand guidelines, key messages, guidance for developing effective comms and other useful templates and comms resources will also be provided. In addition, we have also developed a Toolkit for Participants, a Guide for Hub partners and a robust evaluation framework.

We would love to hear from you if you are interested in being a partner. Below are key dates and high level criteria to help you determine if this is for you.

  • You’re able to join our collaboration from 1 October 2024, and one person on your team is able to join and participate in a two day induction hui in mid to late November 2024 (all time and expenses covered)

  • You bring experience in delivering behaviour change programmes and would would love to collaborate with fellow hubs to strengthen your capability in this area

  • There is comms capacity and experience in your team to recruit participants for the programme, and keep those who are working through the programme engaged and motivated

  • Collaboration and partnerships are central to your work and you’re able to leverage these to help recruit participants and deliver the programme in communities that would find it useful

  • You are connected to a broad range of audiences that would potentially find value in the Every Bite programme. This includes:

    • Mid-to-high income families and young people aged 18-26 who are known to have higher levels of food waste, and/or

    • Individuals who already embed sustainability practices into their daily lives and are looking for opportunities to ‘do their bit’ for the environment, save money and reduce food waste – we have learned that, for many ‘sustainability champions’, reducing avoidable food waste (food that could have been eaten) is new for them , although composting is often a norm.

We will hold information sessions (over Zoom) to share more about the programme plan, our team, what we’ve learned this year, and to answer any questions you may have. The next sessions are on the 19th & 20th August.

We’d love to have you join our Food Appreciation Movement (F.A.M!); a growing collective of people doing our bit for the planet by wasting less, and celebrating Every Bite. The EOI closes on August 16th.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
